Nonprofit Tools for Success: Now

One of my favorite sentences in the book The Magic of Thinking Big is, “Now is the magic word of success.” Now. It’s just three letters. It seems simple.

I can be a “now” person in some ways. My not-high-strung spouse probably doesn’t appreciate the number of times I proclaim that “Now is the word of success,” but fortunately J has a good sense of humor. Like everyone else, I have plenty of things to do on the back burner too, the books I’d like to write, the new skills I’d like to learn, and the personal and professional projects I’d like to begin. Those have fallen in to the categories of later, someday, and when I have time.

In the world of giving, it seems that the media has a new appreciation for “feel good” stories, and opportunities to get our favorite charitable organizations some well-deserved limelight is here. Now. “I’ll get that press release written after I get my files straightened up and finish the interviews for the new office assistant,” might not be the way to go. Trends can come and go in a hurry.

As for services that connect non-profit organizations with donors online? They are important addition to any organization that uses charitable gifts for the work they do. It is a useful tool for outreach, and an excellent way to connect with new donors and supporters. The timing is excellent Now. The concept has been around long enough to have been tested, and it still new enough that utilizing those services is interesting, exciting, cutting edge and newsworthy.

Of course there is value in thinking through things before taking action, and it is important to make wise choices for ourselves and our organizations. Now is about being in tune to the present time, taking action without procrastination, and taking opportunities when they present themselves.  Ever heard of Ray Kroc? He’s the guy who started McDonald’s fast food restaurants. He was definitely a Now guy. He said, “The two most important requirements for major success are: first, being in the right place at the right time, and second, doing something about it.”

What do you need to do Now?

My name is CJ. I write for CatchBlue.

Make a Difference Think of a gift you’ve been meaning to give, a donation you’ve been meaning to make, or a special someone you’ve been meaning to spend a little extra time with, and take action now to make it happen.

The Magic of Thinking Big by David J. Schwartz, was first published in 1959. Since then, it has become a classic work on financial and personal success. Regardless of your take on the importance of material wealth, there is a lot of good and helpful stuff to be found that applies to all sorts of circumstances.
