Giving for Prosperity

“The great psychological paradox concerning money is that if you give to people in need, you feel rich.”  ~Tiki Kustenmacher

“Emerging evidence—crunchy statistics from real data, not the mushy self-help stuff—supports the contention that giving stimulates prosperity, for both individuals and nations. Charity, it appears, can really make you rich.” ~Arthur C. Brooks

Most of us give because it agrees with our value system. Our focus is not personal gain. However, it is interesting to note that besides feeling good, a specific plan for monthly and annual giving can be a wonderful component of assuring our own financial well being.

Taking control of our finances. Giving a specific portion of one’s income gives an overall financial situation a pat on the back. When we decide to give a specific portion each month, we take control of our money. We become intentional with it.  The bills in the mailbox begin to merely indicate our responsibilities, instead of calling the shots.

Karma. What goes around, comes around. Call it what you wish. The laws of the universe seem to indicate that what you give out has a lot to do with what comes back to you. Focused, intentional, regular giving has a side effect of encouraging focused, intentional, regular good stuff coming back your way.

Making a difference. When we contribute to the routine ongoing operations of our churches or temples, or donate money for something like the construction of a new well in a developing nation, we are coming together with others to have a lasting impact on the world. Regardless of the size of that gift, it works toward making the world a better place. A better world makes us all more prosperous. And that really feels good.
